The personality of leaders has a significant influence on the way they sense, think, believe and communicate with other people. Leader’s personality influences their behavior, controls their attitudes, and affects the way they perceive about things. Both perception and attitude play an imperative function in forming leadership behavior.
Different persons have different personal traits. So, inevitably, they act different at different situations. Leader’s Interpersonal skills have a direct impact on the way they act and react to different work situations. At work, leader’s personal traits can affect critical organizational success factors such as motivation, performance, and effectiveness. Leaders who have extravert personality trait are seen to be good at organizing effective meetings and dealing with presentations. Leaders who have less agreeableness often take more time to be skilled at team building, directing and mentoring. Leaders who have positive personal traits such as openness and agreeableness are good at managing larger teams and mediating conflicts among team members. Leaders, who have candidness and high emotional stability, are usually capable of driving a positive attitude towards his or her work responsibilities. Leaders who have self-efficacy and conscientiousness are capable to making effective decisions even when they are under severe pressure.
A good leader must have to be able to understand his personality and figure out how his personality traits influence his behavior at workplace. The more leaders can understand their personality, the better they are able to identify their negative personality traits. Though cognitive personality traits are often very difficult to change, but non-cognitive personality traits are often seen to be improvable. Moreover, most individuals have more-less capability of adapting their personal styles in accordance to a specific situation. Therefore, leaders need to study about his personality traits and learn how he can improve it to positively influence his workplace behavior.
